INL’s Clean Energy & Transportation Division has aligned its mission with the vision of the U.S. Department of Energy. Our work addresses the opportunities and challenges associated with advanced vehicles, bioenergy, hydrogen / fuel cells, wind, and hydro as clean energy resources. We are helping improve energy storage for more efficient batteries, developing new modeling capabilities for new materials, and refining engineering processes and equipment for more effective analyses. Researchers also provide independent, third-party testing to analyze advanced vehicle performance and assess various batteries for longevity and power performance. We work closely with industry and government to ensure the best transition into new transportation technologies. Advanced wind energy and hydropower systems, and their integration into advanced power systems, are core aspects of INL’s Renewable Energy Program. In most cases, renewable energy systems require similar heat transfer, mechanical design and controls necessary for other (nuclear, fossil) energy systems. Our focus and expertise converges around applying engineering research capabilities to challenges associated with renewable energy development, including grid development, mechanical design, reservoir assessment and monitoring, heat transfer, and advanced control systems.
